to dirGeez all this looks like a lot more work!

Yes, yes it is. I like more work and i cannot lie!
  - A real website takes work.
  - A real and complicated website takes even more work.

.........................
But listen up: The result of all this work is *less work*. Why?
Because the website runs smoothly
  - is easy to add content to
  - is easy to modify, change themes and functionality, etc.
  - is easy to maintain because
      - it doesn't get hacked.
      - things are organised so you know where they are
      - things follow a clear process so they (mostly) don't break.
  - is easy to work on as you get used to your tools and processes.
  - and then you have lots more time to sit back and relax ...
or to work on making the site better, or learn new things ...
because the site is running fine, easy to update, nothing to do!

.........................
OK, now, by "easy" i mean easy in the long run -- maybe not so much
  in the short run

Yes sure you can use pre-made apps and templates to make your website.
For some websites that is the exact right thing to do, i do the same.
  For the short run!
They don't extend well to larger, more complicated, and long-lasting websites:
  - The app/template will stop being supported - happens all the time.
  - The app/template may be fine for simple things but extending to
bigger things is a headache - happens all the time.
  - The app/template may be fine at first, then get feature bloat,
get destructive bugs or privacy invasion code,
be passed on to a different author who changes things - happens all the time.

.........................
There's no substitute for your good brain, making decisions based
on what the website needs, what the client needs, what works best
for you and your skillset -- and ... what you want to learn next!

  Yep.
  That's work! dammit :)
  go to top :D
