The grace period for a dot com is 40 days long.  The redemption period that follows is 30 days.  When the redemption has lapsed, the domain will go into a 5-day drop window, and will be deleted by Verisign, the registry for dot com domains.  Once deleted, the domain will be available to anyone to register as a new domain.

During the grace period, you can still renew your domain name at the regular rate, however any web or email hosting based on your domain will cease to function.  Email sent to an address based on @DOMAIN.com will bounce back to the sender.

During the redemption period, you can still renew your domain, but an additional redemption fee will need to be paid along with the domain's normal renewal fee.

whois privacy

  * Not private at godaddy? or ... ?
     A search for tibet.news on 21 sep 2018 at register4less showed whoisprivacy
     and the "query RDDS" notice for email addresses.
     But when i queried whois directly at godaddy (where domain is registered), 
     it showed me all info.

 remember that the price of domain registration may not include 
   whois privacy. You DO want whois privacy. So factor that in 
   when comparing prices.
   Also factor in the support offered by the provider.
      That means, will they help you in a useful way?
   
 Godaddy and other cheap registrars
    - sell your info to spammers and god knows who else.
    - sell your whois searches to domain squatters.
    - try to upsell you all the time, including by tricky
        means like having options ticked by default,
        and in small or hidden locations.
    - Cannot be trusted. At all.

  Biggest lesson - if you really want a domain, it is worth
  paying to backorder it. Waiting for it to expire will more likely
  lose it, as the big domain squatting companies grab it first.
