➽ general info - what it is:

  - Mastodon is Twitter-style social networking combined with
email-style instanced servers. It's named after the metal band,
but themed after the extinct megafauna.

"instance" and "server" mean the same thing.
You have a Local timeline and a Federated timeline.
      Can change servers fairly easily.

    Like twitter - except -
A toot can be up to 500 characters long.
You can't 'quote-tweet'. You can reply to it, or re-toot it without comment.
      No verified accounts.
You can self-verifiy by adding metadata to your profile.
and a link on your website.
            works [mar 2020]
                - can include "me" in the rel for noopener noreferrer.
                - can do on more than one website.
adds a tickmark and green background to the link metadata.
          https://github.com/joyeusenoelle/GuideToMastodon/#okay-how-do-i-let-people-know-that-i-am-who-i-say-i-am
Or use Keybase to sign a toot with my GPG key, or run your own instance. https://decadecity.net/blog/2018/08/23/identity-verification-on-mastodon
Mastodon isn't about leveraging followers into customers. It's
not about SEO or brand loyalty. Mastodon is about people. Don't
        treat people like potential customers who might buy your stuff;
treat them like people whom you might want to get to know.

There is, in fact, no business model. The goal is to create a usable
        and sustainable community experience.

    How is it like email?
Each Mastodon instance is independent but networked, like email servers.
You sign up on one instance, and you can talk to users from other instances
and they can talk to you.

"home" is like a Twitter timeline where you follow anyone you like
"local" is all the people on your server
"federated" is like our Marvel universe

  Comment on changing servers:
"I find the general advice of 'well, just move servers' to be incredibly frustrating and short-sighted, no matter who it's given to or coming from. Whether the intention or not, people's social media 'handles' become part of their identity, just like everything else. Effectively telling people to 'just change who you are' is ... not a good look. Not to mention the things that changing servers leaves behind - post history, followers, followings, etc.
Thread - discussion around moving servers.

➽ ➽ ➽ How-tos:

> rss | instances | embed in cp/wp | find former twitters | back up

.........................
➽ with RSS:

  * You can access a Mastodon user’s feed via RSS by appending
".rss" to the address of their profile.

      example:]
      https://mastodon.social/@davew.rss
Open that in your favorite feed reader. It’ll work.

      Also works with hashtags
      https://mas.to/tags/gardenart.rss
      |
      Uses:
      * Keep updated on someone who posts infrequently.
      * Put together specific information from a variety of sources. Say I just wanted to see feeds from potters, I could collect the rss feeds together and see all of their pottery posts in one place.
      * Be able to tell what you've already seen -- rss readers have a notion of read/unread post.
      * Better way to archive your own posts than the archive downloaded through the Mastodon API. I pointed my browser at my URL + .rss and it downloaded my posts in easily accessible form!
(Info gleaned from the thread. There's more, including mentions of rss readers people are using.)

➽ Finding instances (servers):

  * https://instances.social/
searches the instance description, not the content/users.

.........................
➽ Changing instances:

    - Not to difficult to change an instance.
    - You can export all the people you are following and import into new instance.
      how-tos/sources TBD ...

.........................
➽ How to embed in CP/WP:

  * Embed mastodon statuses in wordpress
      https://wptavern.com/embed-mastodon-statuses-in-wordpress

  * Autopost to mastodon

.......................................................
➽ Find Fediverse accounts of your Twitter followings:

    Fedifinder
Extract the fediverse handles of your Twitter followings
or list members and import them on Mastodon to follow them
    all at once.
    Other options:
      debirdify
by @[email protected] works very similarly.
        https://pruvisto.org/debirdify/
      twitodon
needs you and your followers to be signed up there to match you.

  * Elk
Elk is a new third-party web interface for Mastodon.
      It's free and open source.
It's still in alpha testing, which means it's not yet
ready for prime time, but it seems to be making good progress.
